On Tuesday 19th December, two local students were presented excellence awards by Tonbridge based Millwood Designer Homes, as part of its annual Encouragement Pack initiative. Sales Director, Philip Brown met with students Phoebe Thompson, 17, and Helen Roome, 18, to present them with a trophy, along with a £50 cheque and £50 book token each.

Year 12 student, Phoebe Thompson is currently studying English Literature, Textiles and Art A Levels at Hillview School for Girls and has won the Excellence in Technology prize. After completing sixth form, she plans to undertake an Art Foundation Course and pursue a career in Fashion and Art.

Mr Cavan Pledge, Head of Art at Hillview School for Girls, who nominated Phoebe for her award, comments:  “Phoebe is making excellent progress in her studies and through her developing talent and hard work she will have the option of a great Art or Design career ahead of her. What makes Phoebe stand out is her energetic approach to problem solving. As an Artist and Design student Phoebe does not shy away from taking creative risks with her work. Phoebe thrives on creative energy, experimenting with the qualities of different media and materials to express ideas and realise her intentions.”

Mrs Hilary Burkett, Headteacher, at Hillview School for Girls adds: “We are immensely proud of Phoebe’s achievements, she is a passionate student who applies herself to her studies with energy, commitment and passion. I know that Phoebe will move into an exciting and creative career and am sure that her success in winning the Millwood Encouragement Prize will be the first of many awards and she is one to watch for the future.”

Whilst attending Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar, Helen Roome studied A Levels in Geography, Chemistry and Biology. She has been awarded the coveted Excellence in Geography award and is currently in her first year at the University of East Anglia studying Medicine. Linda Wybar, Headteacher at Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar comments on Helen’s success: “We are enormously proud of Helen, who is now studying Medicine at the University of East Anglia, and we have every confidence she will excel as a future doctor as she has done at TWGGS. We are most grateful to Millwood for recognising her outstanding achievement in Geography through this prize.
