MILLWOOD PROMOTES SAFETY DURING ‘WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK’

  • Hi Vis donation blog Chilton Primary School

At Millwood, we are passionate about giving back to the communities that we build in, so we love to support facilities local to our developments wherever possible. As our development Bakers Field is just five minutes from the beach at Pegwell Bay in Cliffsend, we feel a responsibility to ensure the local facilities, including the stunning 170-acre coastline, are respected and taken care of.

Earlier this year, plans were in place to work with Chilton Primary School in Ramsgate, Kent, to take part in the ‘Great British Beach Clean-Up’ at Pegwell Bay. Our sales team at Bakers Field, along with the Year 4 children at Chilton Primary School, were going to don their hi-vis jackets, grab a bin bag and litter pick along the beach to help maintain its cleanliness for local residents to enjoy. Sadly just days before the event was due to take place, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the event due to the enforced lockdown.

With 30 hi-vis child-sized jackets sat in our office that needed a home, we decided to donate them to Chilton Primary School for a slightly different cause. Walk to School Week takes place in schools across the country every October, aiming to get children on their way to achieving their 60 minutes of recommended daily exercise per day, before even reaching the school gates. Students at Chilton Primary School take part in this event every year, and as evenings start to get darker earlier as we move into Autumn, the hi-vis jackets will ensure the children are kept safe when walking to and from school.

On Thursday 1st October, our Senior Site Manager at Bakers Field, Mark Baker, met with Deputy Head Natalie Barrow and some students at Chilton Primary School to officially commemorate the donation.

Natalie commented of the donation: “We are extremely grateful for Millwood’s kind donation of the jackets, which will be very much put to use by the whole school (children ages 4 to 11) when going out on local walks and visits. Hi-Vis jackets are an important resource to keep our children safe and to now have a new whole class set is so beneficial. It is such a shame that we were unable to take part in such a worthwhile community project with Millwood but we sincerely hope that we will be able to do so in the future.”
