Alexander Galpin, 15, from Crowborough, has been awarded the coveted Excellence in STEM (Science, Technology and Mathematics) prize by The Skinners’ School. The prize is sponsored by Tonbridge-based luxury housebuilder Millwood Designer Homes, as part of the prestigious Encouragement Pack initiative that it runs with a number of schools in Kent and East Sussex.

Alex Galpin is a Year 10 student and is studying a broad range of GCSE’s including English Language and Literature, a language, three sciences and mathematics. For A Level, Alex has chosen to study ICT and Design Technology, reflecting his interest in STEM subjects.

Ed Wesson, Headmaster at The Skinners’ School comments: “We are very grateful for the ongoing support of Millwood Designer Homes in their encouragement for, and recognition of, excellence in science, technology and mathematics. One particularly innovative aspect of Skinners’ curriculum is its teaching of STEM as a specific subject in its own right.”

Ed continues: “Alex is an academically talented young man, with a particular strength in Product Design, a subject he is studying at GCSE level; he hopes to pursue a career in Design or ICT after leaving Skinners. Alex, who excelled in the school’s STEM programme in Key Stage 3, participated in the Kent Young Chef finals in 2014, and is a finalist again in 2015.”

Alex, winner of the Millwood Prize for Excellence in Science, comments: “I am very pleased to have been awarded the Millwood Designer Homes Prize for Excellence in STEM and am grateful for the recognition of my work in D.T., ICT and mathematics.  I have a particular interest in D.T. and science, and am thinking about architecture as a possibly future career, so the support of Millwood is particularly relevant!  I enjoy the broad but related nature of the STEM subjects as it allows me to combine my strengths.  My focus now is on working towards the strongest GCSE results I can.”

Millwood’s Finance & Operations Director Paul Rosbrook met Alex to present him with his prize of a trophy, along with a £50 cheque and £50 book token.

Millwood currently has a range of individually designed homes available across Kent and Sussex including Bell Orchard in Platt, an exclusive new development of three individually designed country houses. These detached new homes blend traditional Kentish vernaculars with a first-class specification and the latest trends in modern-day living. Millwood will also be launching new developments in Ardingly, Crowborough and Isfield in 2016. All of Millwood’s developments have the trademark of using reclaimed materials, giving them the appearance of a quintessential English village.
