In recent months, many people have taken the decision to uproot and move away from the city’s suburbs in favour of a slower pace of life in the countryside. For retired couple Denise (63) and Terry (68) Prosser, moving from their suburban family home to the countryside had been a dream for many years before discovering Millwood Designer Homes’ leafy Surrey development, Cherry Tree Lane. With an idyllic village within walking distance, lots of community clubs and stunning views across the Surrey Hills, Denise and Terry realised they could live out their countryside dream whilst still staying close to their family and friends.
Denise and Terry downsized from a four bedroom property to a three-bedroom semi-detached home at Cherry Tree Lane. Although the couple had lived in the London Borough of Sutton for 63 years, the long-term dream was to move to the countryside when they retired. Denise comments: “When we lived in Sutton, we always used to venture out into the Surrey villages such as Ewhurst, Gomshall, Shere and Abinger for lots of long walks. Our dog Bonnie is a Surrey girl and loves roaming the open countryside, so when we decided that we were ready to downsize, we knew that we had to look for a home in one of these villages. One day when we came walking, we stumbled across Cherry Tree Lane and decided to go in and have a look at the houses there. The sales team showed us around the site and when we saw this property, we fell in love with it immediately.”
“This house is in one of the prime spots here. We’re overlooking a stunning pond opposite us, and beyond that we have beautiful views across Pitch Hill. Even on a rainy day in the Autumn when the leaves have fallen off the trees, the view we have across the Surrey Hills is just perfect. I always think that when we grow old here and we can’t get out any more, we will always have a lovely view to look over. We love it.”
Denise continues: “One of the main factors we were looking for in a new home was to be in walking distance to local amenities, and at Cherry Tree Lane we have that and more. We love Ewhurst village, especially the lovely farm shop that sells everything we need, from fresh meat and vegetables to bread and milk. We also like to catch the bus into Cranleigh or Dorking, to have a browse around the shops. We’ve actually done a lot of walking around the local village with Bonnie, especially in lockdown, and have made lots of new friends just by walking around! We have also become members of the village club and the Cranleigh Country Club, and I’ve also joined the Royal Horticultural Society. We really enjoy getting involved with things going on in the village and making new friends and are loving village life!”
When moving from their detached family home, Denise and Terry were looking for something smaller and more manageable for later life. Denise comments: “There’s a lot more upkeep needed for older houses, so we decided on buying a new build to make sure that we didn’t have to worry about any hidden surprises or costs. One of the qualities we really wanted in a new home was a smaller garden. We had previously maintained a bigger garden, and we didn’t want to spend our time doing that anymore.”
Talking about their lovely new garden, Denise explains: “I absolutely love our new garden, and it definitely takes less time to maintain and make it look pretty – it’s my pride and joy. We had a blank canvas with our garden when we moved in, so we planted cherry trees, a eucalyptus tree and a great big wisteria tree that gives a lot of height to the garden. We’ve planted lots of flowers such as irises, lillies and agapanthas, and I’ve just planted some daffodils and tulips ready for spring next year. It will be a while before the trees become established, but we can’t wait to watch them grow and mature into a real countryside-themed garden!”
Terry added: “After living in the same house for nearly 30 years, relocating to a new home in a new area could have been quite a daunting experience. However, even with the onset of Covid19 and all its problems the move to Cherry tree lane was a breath of fresh air and made the move even more pleasant by the friendly people of Ewhurst.”
Denise and Terry’s daughter’s Claire Earing and Amelia Fitzsimons have been very involved in their parents’ relocation. They said: “Finally making the plunge to leave the family home and also the familiar surroundings was a real challenge for our parents at first, but within weeks of them settling in to their new home we could see if was definitely the right thing for them to do. Our mum and dad have both got a whole new lease of life and we love spending time making memories in a new family environment.” Denise concludes: “Moving to a new build in the countryside is definitely one of the best decisions we have ever made. We loved living in the suburbs, but the village lifestyle suits our time of life now, and we wouldn’t go back. We now get to spend more time with our grandchildren as we don’t have to maintain a big home, and we can do more of what we want to do. We would really recommend buying at Cherry Tree Lane – we’re just so happy here.”
