TV chef Tony Tobin reckons the kitchen at Chartfield House in Reigate, Surrey, is a cook’s dream, and he should know because he has actually cooked in it! A familiar face from BBC’s Ready Steady Cook and Head Chef of The Dining Room, a chic, contemporary restaurant in Reigate, Tony has a very special treat for whoever buys the substantial five-bed home – he has agreed to provide a meal for six, to be cooked in the Chartfield House kitchen.

A special launch event was recently held at the home, which has been built by Millwood Designer Homes. During the day, lucky guests were able to watch Tony demonstrate his signature dishes from his restaurant, including a flagship starter of seared sea scallops with a Thai potato cake and a hot and sweet syrup, which has been on his menu for 20 years.

Says Tony, “I was delighted to be able to help Millwood at their launch event for Chartfield House. My first reaction when I saw the kitchen that I would be cooking in was ‘Wow!’ It’s an absolutely beautiful room, and it’s been really well designed. The open-plan style is great for dinner parties – especially for me, because when I throw a dinner party, I like people to see what I’m doing because I’m a bit of a show off! When you’re cooking for people, it’s nice that they can relax with a drink nearby, which is the way it should be.

“At the event, I also gave guests some little tips on how to make your plates look really good. When you’re presenting a dish, it’s all about the finishing, just as it is when you’re building a house. Looking around Chartfield House, you can see that the finish is immaculate. The aim was for my dishes to match the excellence of the home!

“It was great to be able to show guests how the kitchen would work day-to-day for families as well as for dinner parties. It’s not just the kitchen that’s impressive though. There are so many fantastic features it’s hard to know where to start, but some elements really stood out for me, including the lift to all floors, perfect if you’ve been standing on your feet in a busy kitchen all day and you’re too tired to take the stairs. Then there’s the wine cellar. It’s important to match your wine with your food and there is plenty of room to stock a variety of grapes and styles to ensure you will always have something to hand.

“Thanks to the home’s elevated position, you’ve also got panoramic views of the Surrey countryside from the terrace, which means you can really spoil your guests with pre-dinner drinks or even al-fresco dining.
“All in all, if Chartfield House was a dish, it would get three Michelin stars!”

His butcher, Robert & Edwards, is on the corner of the high street, and he sources his fish from Simpsons in nearby Coulsdon because they get their fish direct from the coasts rather than markets.
