Ten years on, John Elliott, Managing Director of Millwood Designer Homes highlights the impact of the UK’s first high-speed rail service, HS1, and its effect on the Kent property market.

Since services began in 2007, HS1 has opened up a wealth of opportunities for local businesses, individuals and the Kent property market, all benefitting from rapid rail services to London and Europe. As the UK’s first domestic high-speed rail service celebrates its tenth anniversary, the outlook for the Kent property market is positive, with the 140mph train service continuing to transform the area’s economic fortunes.

The service has brought a wealth of economic benefits including a growth in population and higher employment rates, which has in turn led to an increasing demand for quality new homes.

To help meet that demand, Millwood is incredibly active in Kent, with three new developments, as part of our exclusive ‘Kent Collection.’ The developments – Windsor Meadows in Marden, Brambledown in Maidstone and The Old Orchard in Sutton Valence – are currently selling extremely well, as buyers are attracted to the area’s resurgence, brought on in part by the arrival of HS1 a decade ago.

Kent has many significant pull factors that help draw new buyers to the area. HS1 of course has attracted a steady flow of London ‘leavers’, keen to take advantage of Kent’s relatively attractive house prices. The increased access to the capital has provided an ideal commuter base in one of the Home Counties. Kent’s county town of Maidstone, where our Brambledown development is currently underway, is undergoing major development, kick-starting the regeneration of the town. Home buyers are also drawn to the selection of excellent schools, surrounding countryside and good transport links, such as the M20, M25 and Eurostar.

In recent years, HS1 has definitely provided a significant boost and positive effect on local economies, attracting more buyers to the area, and acting as a catalyst for regeneration and other infrastructure improvements across the county. The growing appeal of this wonderful county means that demand for quality homes is stronger than ever, and with the ripple effect of the HS1 economic boost still being felt, it’s a great investment for those looking for their new home.
