A geographical future
Former Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar school pupil Grace Carpenter paid a visit to the school last week to collect a special prize; the coveted Millwood Designer Homes Cup for Geography A-Level.
The prize is sponsored by Tonbridge-based housebuilder Millwood Designer Homes as part of its prestigious Encouragement Pack initiative that it runs with a number of schools in Kent and East Sussex.
Deputy Headteacher Rosanne Brimsted was delighted to see Grace back at the school, saying: "Grace won the award because she was the most outstanding geography student of 2010/11, but she also made a lot of other valuable contributions to the school as well. For example, she was the charities prefect and did a lot to help raise money. She oversaw all the younger girls for their cake sales and also helped organise Stars in their Eyes, our biggest fundraising event of the year, which raised thousands of pounds."
Grace was surprised to have won the award, saying, "I wasn't going to do geography for GCSE initially but I changed my mind at the last minute and haven't looked back. I wasn't the only one who really enjoyed the subject, either. It was probably the most popular subject at the school, making it even more rewarding to have been chosen as the winner of this award."
Philip Brown, Millwood's Sales Director, presented Grace with the winning trophy along with a £50 cheque and £50 book token, saying, "It was a pleasure to meet Grace and to hear about all of her achievements, not just those for geography. It is not surprising that she has gone on to study geography at Durham University, where she is currently in her first year of a three-year course.
"It seems that her future with geography does not stop there either as, although she currently plans to go into law, she still wants to maintain a geography connection, perhaps with something like energy law. I anticipate that Grace has an exciting career ahead of her and I wish her all the best for the future."
